“When You Wish Upon a Star”
Location: Mono Lake, California

This image was taken in August of 2004. Mono Lake is a majestic body of water covering about 65 square miles. Over 1 million years old, this ancient lake is one of the oldest lakes in North America, and is also three times as salty as the ocean. The unusual rock formations that grace the shores of the lake are known as “tufa towers” (too'-fah), formed by interaction of freshwater springs and alkaline lake water. I was nearing the end of a six week photography trip when I reached Mono Lake; like many others I am fascinated with the area and did not want to pass up an opportunity to try to capture this interesting and ancient American Landscape. I was just starting to really experiment with night photography, and I wanted to capture that transition from darkness to light, from yesterday to today. I hope that for the viewer who has never been to Mono Lake I have captured their imaginations, and for those who have I trust that I have done justice to an important part of our ever-changing landscape
